This programme is a component of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation adopted in The Hague in 2002. The main objective is to distinguish and preserve the most valuable, according to international criteria, areas of European and global significance in Ukraine, and include them in the network of IPAs in Europe and the world. The applied methods are presented in the Plantlife publication Identification of key plant areas (Russian translation, Moscow, 2003, ІUCN-CIS). Model areas are selected. It has three sections: forest pathology studies, forestry studies, and studies of natural forest renewal. For each section specific methods are used. For forest pathology studies all trees are accounted for and the following indices are recorded: diameter of the trunk in four places, technical condition, Craft classes accounting for five degrees of suppression, category of the sanitary condition of the tree accounting for six classes. Before 2000 measurements were made twice annually (in spring and autumn), nowadays they are made once annually. Forestry studies account for all the trees in the plots. Estimates are made of the tree height, diameter, girth, natural renewal and forest undergrowth. All recordings are done once every five years. The dynamics of natural renewal are studied by accounting for cases of renewal, identification of the species, age, height and assessment of it according to the scale of Gorshenina. Recordings are done annually. For studies of forest ecosystems sampling plots are used: there are six for forest pathology studies, 63 for forestry studies, and five for studies of natural renewal.
